Kos is a Greek Island located in the Dodecanese which is next to the Gulf of Cos. This island is only 4 kilometers from the coast of Turkey. In 366 BC the town of Kos came to be and not too much after that the city was taken over by the Roman Empire and became a part of Byzantine Empire. Then as time went on the islands was taken over again, this time by the Venetians who in turn sold it to the Knights Hospitalet of Rhodes. As history says about 200 years later the Knights were facing a heavy invasion from Turkey and they fled the islands leaving it abandoned. The Ottoman Empire did have control over Kos for 400 years until Italy took over in 1912 during the war and then German took over until 1946 and then the islands came to the United Kingdom who gave it back to Greece in 1947.
Hippocrates is said to have been born on the island of Kos and in the middle of the island in town there is a Plane Tree of Hippocrates, a dream temple where Hippocrates taught medicine and there is also the International Hippocratic Institute and the Hippocratic Museum which is dedicated to him. Also near the Institute are the ruins of Aslepieion where Herodicus taught Hippocrates medicines.
There are daily Ferries from the mainland to the island of Kos. If you wish to stay on the island there are many hotels to choose from and they are all centrally located near villages and taverns. If you wish to take the day off from sight seeing many of the historical sites of Kos, you can just relax with a day on the many beaches that Kos has, after all it is an island. Each village has hotels to stay in, beaches to go to, sites to see and shopping to do. The shopping is great in Kos and the night life is just extraordinary.
If you are looking for a way to get around the island, there are buses and car rentals as well as tour guides who will show you the best of the island of Kos. The weather is simply beautiful from about March to October. If you are planning to come to Greece then these are months to do so. You may encounter a heat wave in July or August but overall these months are ideal for vacationing in Greece.
Points of interest in Kos are that they have beautiful old chapels that can be found on the slopes and the peaks of Mount Dikaios which is located in Asfendiou, Pyli and Kefalos. There are also old castles that are on Kos, the ruins of castles like Pyli and Kefalos. There are also beautiful windmills at Kefalos and Andimachia, these windmills are actually used by farmers to turn wheat into flour. There are so many ruins and places to see that Kos though may be a place you haven’t heard about until now but if you are in Greece, make plans to go to Kos at least for the day.
