(Rate 1 2 3 4 5)
The island of Ios is located in the Cyclades group in the Aegean Sea. While Greece has other sources, it counts tourism as a major part of their economy. Ios islands are a part of Greece. Ios is an island that is filled with hills and long cliffs that go way down in to the sea on most sides of the island. The island is located between Naxos and Santorini. The islands population is about 1850 people. So you can see it is not a big island. The main port of Ios is located at the top of the Ormos harbor in the northwest region of the island.

The villages on Ios have some historical importance but because the island is small the history does not get recognized. It has been written that the Author Homer, his mother was born on Ios and Homer was indeed buried there as well. The locals are very proud to have such a brilliant man buries there that they will take tourists to the northern most point of the island and there they will see a rocky entrance of a tomb, but others day that there is no real evidence that Home is really buried there but it can’t be discounted either.

Also, at the north end of the island are ruins from a Venetian castle from the 15th century. The island of Ios is said to have 365 churches and chapels. It is a significant amount of chapels and churches because it represents a church for every day of the year. From the Port of Ios you can walk about 15 minutes, you walk up this steep donkey path that takes you to the village called Chora. This is a white Cycladic village that has many stairs and narrow walkways. The streets are so narrow that cars cannot fit through the streets.

But it has changed a bit over time; the village is now pretty much taken over by tourists. Meaning that the shop, bars, discos and restaurants cater towards tourists. Tourism is a huge part of life on Ios, the Milopotas Beach is located on this islands. This beach is one of the most popular in all of Greece. There are not that many settlements for residence anymore, tourism has become a staple at the island. The island has 3 major beaches, the Theodoti, Kalamos and the Manganari beaches.

The island of Ios does have a great amount of young tourists and this dates back to the 70’s when tourists would come and sleep on the beaches to get the true Ios experience. Now, young tourists still go there but resorts have gone up in lieu of sleeping on the beach. Some parts of the island have changed the road are paved so that cars may travel through and a new amphitheater has been created by a German artichect Peter Haupt. It sits on the top of the village hill. The theater is not really used fro cultural events as more residence would like to see.
