Corfu is a Greek Island located in the Ionian Sea. The island is part of the Corfu Prefecture and the main town located on that Prefecture is Corfu or Kerkyra in Greek. Many of the Greek Mythology that you hear is actually set in Corfu. For example, Poseidon who is God of the Sea and Asopos which is a Greek Mainland River. In Greek Mythology Poseidon fell in love with a nymph named Korkyra (Corfu) who was the daughter of Asopos and the river nymph Metope. Poseidon kidnaps her and brings her to a deserted island and offer to name that island after her and today in English the island is named Corfu.
In the Old Town of Corfu seems like just that, old towns when you walk through on cobblestone sidewalks and the streets are perfectly clean, the people of this city work hard to keep it clean so people will come and walk around and enjoy their surroundings. You get the sense of an old town when the streets are so narrow that you can not get a regular vehicle down the street. There are so many sites to see right in Corfu, the Palaio Frourio which means Old Citadel is an old Venetian fortress which surrounds the perimeter.
The Neo Frourio which is the New Citadel, this is a huge complex that takes over the northern part of the city. The landscapes are beautiful and you can tour the New Citadel, which has been closed for a long period of time but is now open to the public. The Ano and Kato Plateia are two large squares located in Corfu near the Old Citadel. People come to converge and listen to music. Or you could just walk around and soak in some of the old buildings and see the architecture that was used in making these old buildings.
There have been many real battles in the island’s history and it is the only city in Greece where it is surrounded by castles. Two of the castles surround the city today and the city in Greece to be officially declared as Kastropolis (Castle City) by the Greek Government. Corfu is rich with history and you can see some evidence of that as you walk around the city. But there are other things to do while on vacation in Corfu, there are water activities, such as diving or water skiing. You could relax on the beach and take in the warm weather and beautiful scenery.
Corfu is a nice quiet city located in Greece. If you are planning a trip to Greece, maybe you could take a side trip away from the major cities like Athens and spend a day in a smaller city that has almost as much history. Corfu has hotels and other lodging accommodations if you want to stay there one night. They have great restaurants and great night life.
