Athens is not only the capital of Greece but it is the largest city as well. Athens is known as one of the oldest cities in Greece, the city was named after the Goddess Athena over 3,000 years ago. There are currently over 3.7 million people living in Athens today. Just as New York City is the hub of New York State, Athens is the same to Greece. The metropolitan area in Athens has everything you could think of, economic centers, financial institutions, many industrial area and political and many cultural building as well.
Athens has a large amount of heritage attached to it by even if you visit the city today, you can actually feel its history. Athens houses one of the most recognized buildings in the world, the Parthenon on the Acropolis. Millions of people flock to Athens yearly to see this piece of history. Athens is also home to a few of the World Heritage Sites including the Olympic stadiums from the very first modern day Olympics in 1896 to the Summer Olympics in 2004.
Athens is also known for their climate, because the city is located at the changing point between the Mediterranean and the Alpine Climates, the city typically shares the climate with the Mediterranean. The amount of rain fall in Athens comes in October through mid April. It does rain in the summer and fall but not very often and when it does it comes in the form of showers and thundershowers. The city is situated in a strong rain shadow as they call it and what this means is that Athens generally has a very dry climate and in the northern suburbs they experience lower temperatures and more snowfall in the winter.
Athens is most known as a great tourist location. If you ask 5 people where they wish to go on vacation 4 of them will say Greece and 3 of them will say in particular Athens. There are so many sites to see in Athens because of the rich history it shares. The Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Temple of Hephaestus in Theseum. These two sites are located near the Parthenon and the Agora.
Syntagma Square or Constitution Square is located in central Athens and is only a new miles from what used to be Royal Palace which is now the Greek Parliament. In that vicinity is the National Garden and some of the most historic hotels. Syntagma is the largest square in Athens and also houses the most hotels.
Southeast of Syntagma Square is the Kallimarmaro Stadium. This is the place where the very first modern day Olympics took place in 1896. It is the only stadium anywhere that is made from white marble taken from Mount Penteli which is the same place where the materials to build the Parthenon were from. There are so many sites in Athens to see, if you are planning a trip, choose your locations wisely, you want to make sure you see everything you want to see.
